A meeting with the writer Ali Alabdallah

A conversation about the book “Att älska knäckebröd” — on identity, belonging and the collision of cultures, starting from a hard bread at a refugee centre.

At a meeting arranged by Sadda in Helsingborg, the writer and journalist Ali Alabdallah spoke about his book “Att älska knäckebröd”, which sets out his life between Syria and Sweden.

The conversation was not only about bread, but about identity, belonging and the collision of cultures. The idea for the book came from his first encounter with knäckebröd at a refugee centre — something that looked hard and strange, but had a taste and a history. Just like people.

Ali spoke about the differences between cultures, how hard it can be to move to a new country, and how much it matters to stay curious, to talk to one another, and not to judge too quickly.

It was an honest and simple conversation — with both humour and reflection — that helped us understand each other better.
