A society free of violence

Nadia Jaber of the Swedish Red Cross on the forms violence takes, on family violence in a new country, and on why early intervention matters.

As part of Sadda's work to raise awareness in the community and to support the questions that concern women, a talk was held today under the title “A society free of violence”, with a fine attendance of women belonging to the association and others concerned with social questions.

The talk was given by the adviser Nadia Jaber, who works at the Swedish Red Cross. She took up violence in all its forms and the factors that contribute to its spread, with a focus on family violence in the setting of life away from home, cultural pressure and the conflict of identity.

Among the main subjects she raised were: cultural shock and its effect on family relationships; the barriers of language and culture between parents and their children; social isolation and the gap in language between the generations; cultural misunderstanding and its effects, mental and physical, on those subjected to violence; a comparison of the laws against violence in a number of countries; and the importance of prevention and of early intervention.

The meeting held constructive and lively discussion between those present, which showed a growing awareness of how much it matters to strengthen a culture of dialogue and to reject violence in all its forms.

At the close, the association thanked the adviser Nadia Jaber for coming and for her valuable contribution, and all the women who took part for their engagement and their continued interest in supporting social and humanitarian questions.
